Outlining the need for additional SEND support
Many schools are facing increasing challenges in meeting the needs of pupils with SEND in classrooms given the cuts both to SEND funding and school budgets in general. This is often leading to a reduction in the number of additional adults available to support the needs of individual pupils in classrooms.
Teachers therefore need to have access to quality information about what works best for those pupils with SEND in their classes and to be skilled in adaptive teaching to ensure that that they are able to access the curriculum.
How we can support
- ✓ Conducting a whole school developmental SEND review to support leaders’ evaluation of the quality and impact of the wider provision and to provide clear next steps to improve
- ✓ Working with SENDCOS to ensure plans and information provided to staff about pupils’ needs, targets and how best to meet them are of the highest quality
- ✓ Developing the skills of the SENDCO in evaluating the impact of wider provision, including classroom visits, work scrutiny and data analysis
- ✓ Providing training for staff at every career stage on meeting the needs of pupils with SEND
Also included
- ✓ Working in classrooms to coach staff to deliver effective adaptive teaching for particular children in their class
- ✓Undertaking ‘pupil pursuits’ to view the curriculum experience through the eyes of the child to identify ways to make both the curriculum and teaching more inclusive for all pupils in the class
- ✓ Ensuring additional staff are deployed in the most effective way and are having maximum impact
