Support to the early years

Getting a good start in education has never been more important than it is now. Ofsted’s recent report ‘Strong foundations in the first years of school’ highlights the importance of securing ‘foundational knowledge’ and of explicitly teaching this in a way that does not lead to cognitive overload for young children. Together with the fact that early years provision is currently still awarded a single word judgement, we know that many primary schools are reviewing the curriculum that they offer to the youngest children to ensure that they are well-prepared for learning in Year 1 and beyond.

How we can support

  • Provide pre and post Ofsted support
  • Work alongside staff in the classroom to provide a coaching model for best practice
  • Work alongside staff in classrooms to coach around meeting the needs of identified targeted children.

Meeting the needs of pupils with SEND in Early Years

More and more schools are experiencing challenges in meeting the increasingly complex needs of children in early years. This has been particularly evident post-pandemic and lockdown and is magnified by a reduction in special needs funding and the long waiting lists to access specialist services.

Adults in early years are therefore working extremely hard to adapt the provision to meet the needs of children with SEND, while at the same time ensuring that all children in their settings are getting off to a flying start. Some are responding by creating their own internal specialist provisions and are balancing the demands of meeting the learning needs of children with SEND while ensuring that they are integrated with the rest of the school and are able to socialise with their peers.

What do school leaders say about our Early Years support?

Our experience of working with B11 School Improvement Partners has been really positive and influenced our whole school approaches to EYFS, behaviour and attitudes, as well as our preventative safeguarding curriculum. We value the insight provided by our SIP and their knowledge of perspectives beyond our school, Trust and local authority. The work with our senior and middle leaders has also developed their confidence and Ofsted readiness.
